Haynsburg Castle was first documented in 1185 by the nobleman “Conradus de Hagensberg”, who is known to have lived until 1223, and in 1238 it was referred to as a fortified site in a document by the margrave Heinrich.

It served to protect the imperial hunting palace in Kayna and to secure the roads and trade. There were frequent changes of owner. In the 15th century the castle served agricultural purposes.

Thanks to construction measures, the castle, which today accommodates a hotel and riding stable, is in good condition. It offers visitors a wonderful view over the Elster valley. The Elster cycle trail and numerous hiking options can be found in the immediate vicinity.
