Schönburg Castle was built by the Thuringian Count Ludwig the Springer. According to legend he had the castle constructed out of love for Adelheid, the wife of the Wettin count palatinate.

She lived on the opposite bank of the river in Goseck Castle. What became of the love between Ludwig and Adelheid is a question best asked during a guided tour.
The building of Schönburg, a former bishops’ castle, dates back to the 12th century. From here there is a wonderful view over the Saale valley and of Goseck Castle.
