This cycle trail connects the states of Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt. It runs alongside the river from its source in the Eichsfeld to its confluence with the Saale in the Blütengrund near Naumburg.

Along the way the trail leads through the towns of Dingelstädt, Mühlhausen, Bad Langensalza, Sömmerda, Heldrungen, Artern, Roßleben, Nebra, Laucha and Freyburg. The route runs through varied scenery, such as the Reisersche Valley, the Unstrut Valley conservation area, the Thüringer Pforte near Heldrungen and the Saale-Unstrut-Triasland nature park with the Saale-Unstrut winegrowing region.

Alongside the trail there are interesting old castles, important churches and abbeys, historical museums, attractive parks and a number of watermills. Attractions such as the Nebra Ark visitor centre at the site where the sky disc was found, stopping places along the Romanesque Road, “Gartenträume Sachsen-Anhalt” locations and the Wiehe model railway are of interest.
